Free Trade Agreements Lead to Rising Exports, Study Confirms

Boracay, the Philippines, 25 May 2015 –As regional free trade agreements proliferate in the Asia-Pacific, a new APEC Policy Support Unit report confirms that these agreements do make a difference in boosting exports. These preliminary findings were submitted to APEC Trade Ministers in Boracay over the weekend.

The number of regional and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) in the Asia-Pacific region has multiplied since the 1990s with APEC members among the most active economies in negotiating FTAs. At present, APEC members have 144 enforced FTAs, approximately 53 percent of the global number of FTAs.

Trade Ministers from the 21 APEC members have convened in Boracay intent on unlocking new and under-represented sources of trade and economic growth. Emphasis is on opening up cross-border business opportunities for small firms vital to boosting job creation, innovation and productivity within Pacific Rim economies.

Gregory Domingo, Philippine Secretary of Trade and Industry and Chair of the two-day APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting, explained the importance of widening micro and small business participation in international markets and taking forward ambitious policy solutions in his opening remarks on Saturday.

Firman convenio de colaboración Senado y la Universidad de Colima

  •     Se realizarán investigaciones y análisis sobre la región Asia Pacífico.
  •     El objetivo es apoyar a la Comisión legislativa del Senado en esta materia.

El Senado de la República y la Universidad de Colima firmaron un convenio de colaboración, a fin de conjugar esfuerzos en la elaboración de proyectos de investigación y análisis, en diversas materias relacionadas con la competencia legislativa de la Comisión de Relaciones Exteriores Asia Pacífico, que preside el senador Teófilo Torres Corzo.
